"I suspect what they're thinking and not saying is, If Dick Cheney weren't vice president, who'd be a good vice president? They're thinking, At some time down the road we may wind up thinking about a new plan. And one night over drinks at a barbecue in McLean one top guy will turn to another top guy and say, "Under the never permeable and never porous Dome of Silence, tell me . . . wouldn't you like to replace Cheney?""
Shame on you Peggy. And Shame on anyone else thinking this.
This makes me sick. I do not think I will read anything else you have to say.
And if you were thinking of McLame, you really have sunk to new lows.

You Surrendered Much
Scott Lane - San Pedro, Calif.
I have read and appreciated so much of what you have written in your career. This column on Dick Cheney will go down as the most foolish, silly and yes cruel things you have ever written. You kicked one of our own, a great one of our own, on nothing, when he was down, in a deeply personal way. And you owe him an apology. I simply couldn't believe what I was reading. You surrendered much. I doubt I'm alone.
You are not, Scott.
